Trezor vs Ledger
Safe 7 or Nano Gen5? Start with the trust model, not a ranking number.
The decision in one minute.
Current two-device assessment · 2026-10-06 · no universal winner.
You prioritize public reviewability
Start by inspecting Safe 7's design and the chip disclosure. Public code improves reviewability; it does not certify the shipped device.
You prefer the Ledger workflow
Inspect Nano Gen5's ecosystem and closed components. Keep the offline Recovery Key distinct from the Recover subscription.
Your recovery plan is unclear
Pause the purchase. Choose a backup format and test a compatible restore before moving meaningful funds.
Compare what you will actually use.

Check the exact coin, network, mobile app, firmware and transaction type before purchase. A supported token list or a large display does not prove every contract action is decoded.
A device is not the whole recovery plan.
Conceptual workflow, not a backup-entry tool. Never enter recovery words here. Multi-share backup is not simply cutting a word list into pieces.
Words, shares, Recovery Key and Recover are different
BIP39: mnemonic backup with an optional passphrase. SLIP39: a different share-based standard; compatibility must be checked explicitly. Safe 7 defaults to a 20-word SLIP39 backup.
Ledger Recovery Key: an offline, PIN-protected card. Ledger Recover: a separate identity-based service using encrypted backup fragments. Neither is a substitute for understanding and testing recovery.
One security disclosure worth understanding.
Ledger Donjon describes invasive laser-fault work against TROPIC01. Trezor says Safe 7's other layers keep PIN and backup protected. We have not reproduced either finding or product assurance. Compare the scope and prerequisites, not just the headline.
Donjon is Ledger's security lab, not a commercially unaffiliated reviewer. This source check does not certify either product or claim that every vulnerability has been found.

Display, wired/wireless connection and manufacturer architecture description.
Product claims, not independent proof of safety. Checked 2026-10-06.E Ink display, USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC purpose.
NFC is used for Recovery Key and Security Key; it is not a general transaction-signing connection. Checked 2026-10-06.Safe 7 default 20-word SLIP39 backup and alternative BIP39 formats.
Word counts and standards are not interchangeable; test the chosen restore path. Checked 2026-10-06.Ledger's 24-word recovery-phrase explanation.
A backup must be recorded privately, not entered into this website. Checked 2026-10-06.Offline PIN-protected card versus an identity-based fragment-backup subscription.
Different trust models. Neither is a reason to discard recovery words or skip a recovery drill. Checked 2026-10-06.Reviewable applications and restricted operating-system components.
Manufacturer disclosure, not an independent verification of a shipped firmware build. Checked 2026-10-06.Manufacturer's account of layered protection and component-level impact.
Trezor says this chip alone does not expose wallet backup or PIN; we did not reproduce that assurance. Checked 2026-10-06.Invasive component-level firmware-verification bypass on the tested chip/bootloader.
Ledger's lab is owned by a competing manufacturer. This is not proof of remote Safe 7 wallet compromise. Checked 2026-10-06.Backup, offline savings and recovery/inheritance considerations.
General guidance, not a test of these two products. Checked 2026-10-06.Before you leave for a store.
