Gifts for Crypto Enthusiasts: Useful, Not Risky

A useful crypto gift should fit the recipient's experience without creating a security problem. Start with learning; let them choose and initialize their own wallet.

Choose for the person

The curious beginner

The Basics of Bitcoins and Blockchains by Antony Lewis. A broad introduction for someone who wants to understand the terminology.

Check the fit before gifting

The original English edition is from 2018, ISBN 9781633538009. It gives context, not current trading or wallet setup instructions. Ask whether the recipient prefers an introduction, an economic argument or a technical book. A beginner should not have to learn programming to enjoy the gift.

Check the format at checkout and read the author's contents preview in our book guide. Do not add a promise that the recipient will make money after reading it.

The technical reader

Mastering Bitcoin, 3rd Edition by Andreas M. Antonopoulos and David A. Harding. A print reference for a reader interested in implementation.

Check the fit before gifting

This is the 2023 third edition, ISBN 9781098150099. It is much more technical than an introductory cryptocurrency overview. It makes sense for someone who enjoys examining keys, signatures and transactions, not someone seeking tips on which token to buy.

The authors also provide a free online edition. A physical copy is a preference, not exclusive access to the knowledge. Check that they do not already own it and that they want a print reference.

The self-custody user

A recipient-chosen hardware wallet. Check their exact model preference, networks, phone and recovery approach first.

Give the device, never the keys

Buy only through an official or manufacturer-listed seller. Do not initialize the wallet, write down a seed, load it with funds or set a PIN for the recipient. They need to generate and control their own recovery material privately.

A higher price is not proof of a better fit. Avoid surprise backup accessories until you know the standard and word count. A duplicate device or incompatible carrier can be less useful than a book or simply asking what they need.

Three things to leave out of the gift box

Prewritten recovery words. Preconfigured wallets. Promises of profit. The recipient should control the setup and decide whether to own crypto at all. Learning without buying an asset is a valid outcome.

What should I check when ordering?

For books: language, edition, format and whether the recipient already owns it. For hardware: exact model, official seller, unopened condition and compatibility. In both cases, check the delivery estimate and applicable return terms on the merchant's page. We do not publish live prices or promise holiday delivery.

Do not ask the recipient for a recovery phrase to determine compatibility. Model, network and backup standard are enough to start a discussion without revealing access credentials.
